The eight weeks course will cover the following areas:

• What is health information and what makes it important,

• overview of the legal and ethical rules that apply to collecting, using, storing and disclosing personal health information,

• the role of consent in processing personal health information.

• when is consent not required,

• special rules applying to personal health information and research,

• the challenge of balancing an individual’s right to control their health information with the need for the sharing of information to support a high performing health service,

• Rights of access and correction to personal health information,

• the unique individual health identifier,

• the development by the State of national digital healthcare records and what that means for data protection and personal health information,

• important new developments set to come on stream that will significantly affect data protection and personal health information: namely the Health Information Bill and the EU European Health Data Space.

Peter Lennon -Short Bio 

Peter Lennon worked in the Department of Health on data protection, health information and eHealth. He has written two books and made numerous presentations on data protection and health information. His primary degree is in Business Studies and his postgrad work was in Protective Employment Legislation. He has lectured on a range of subjects, including health service management.
